Designed by Giancarlo Mattioli & Gruppo Architetti Urbanisti Città Nuova in the glamorous 60’s era, Nesso stuns a pivotal part of the Artemide identity. It displayed a ground breaking use of injection-molded plastic as a contemporary material for object production. An “icon” of design, the lamp is the permanent collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Museum of Modern Art.

1965 年，Giancarlo Mattioli 与城市建筑师集团“Città Nuova”一起参加了“Studio Artemide Domus di Milano”竞赛，Artemide 和 Editrice Domus 打算在竞赛中探索新的设计方法，让灯具设计成艺术性的照明工具。

In 1965, with the Urban Architects Group “Città Nuova”, Giancarlo Mattioli participated in the competition “Studio Artemide Domus di Milano,” with which Artemide and Editrice Domus intended to discover new ways to conceive lamps as lighting objects.

The submitted project was a lamp inspired by the shape of jellyfish, in which Mattioli and the Group’s professionals worked on new ways to obtain a subdued environmental light using an appliance aimed at concealing the light bulb.

The project succeeded, and the lamp was produced from 1967 with the name Nesso; it then became a symbolic icon of those years, and enjoyed long-term fortune.

Nessino is the smaller version of the Nesso lamp, originally designed by Giancarlo Mattioli and Gruppo Architetti Urbanisti Città Nuova in the 1960s. The lamp has become a design icon, with its mushroom shape and bright orange or white hues. Part of the “Modern Classics” reissued line, it was a marvel of ABS thermoplastic injection-molding when first introduced in 1967 thus bringing industrial materials and methods to the home and office environments. A dash of color and a design inspired from nature, Nessino stems from the visionary identity of Artemide.With its smaller size, Nessino finds its place in a wide range of settings.

Giancarlo Mattioli 于 1933 年出生于博洛尼亚，是一位意大利男子，兼具设计师、建筑师、城市规划师、肖像画家和知识分子等身份，他在 1950 年代和 1960 年代取得了巨大的成功。1961 年，与 Pierluigi Cervellati、Umberto Maccaferri、Franco Morelli、Gianpaolo Mazzucato 和 Mario Zaffagnini 共同创立了城市建筑师集团“Città Nuova”。

Born in Bologna in 1933, Giancarlo Mattioli was an Italian designer, architect, urban planner, portrait painter, man, and intellectual, who enjoyed great success in the 1950s and 1960s.  in 1961, founded the Urban Architects Group “Città Nuova” together with Pierluigi Cervellati, Umberto Maccaferri, Franco Morelli, Gianpaolo Mazzucato, and Mario Zaffagnini.

The Urban Architects Group “Città Nuova” was a union of young professionals who decided to engage in architecture – and urban design – moving consciously away from the figure of the architect seen as an individual creator in order to listen to local communities and to work together.
