About NAO
Open Innovation is a key success factor in creating solutions for a sustainable future: Long-term relationship building and a close network between topuniversities in Asia Pacific and BASF as industrial partner enable all of the partners to extend their scientific horizon and understanding of future materials and systems. A goal of this initiative is to jointly develop new materials for the automotive, building and construction, and personal care industries.
The academic partners contribute not only their expertise in material science, modeling and formulation methods, but also provide new ideas for interesting approaches to research. Besides fundamental scientific knowledge, BASF researchers contribute the necessary experience in transforming research results into technically feasible products and processes and input about which material properties are needed in the different industries and applications.
The selection of the research topics is based on common scientific interest between the academic institution and BASF. Deep scientific understanding and links to given applications are key featuresof successful co-operation projects. The scientific work is mainly performed at the university or institute by selected students – PhD candidates or postdocs –in close collaboration with BASF scientists. Furthermore, NAO offers a regular exchange platform in the form of workshops, discussions and presentations, supporting innovation in polymers and advanced materials in Asia.
Three postdoc centers form an important partof the BASF global academic networking landscape: NAO in Asia Pacific, JONAS inEurope and NORA in North America.
NAO Academic Partners
Open innovation is a key success factor for creating solutions for a sustainable future: Long-term relationship building and a close network between topuniversities in Asia Pacific and BASF as industrial partner enables all the partners to extend their scientific horizon and the understanding of futurematerials and systems.
First collaboration projects have started with leading universities in China, South Korea and Japan in the field of materials and polymer science. Further collaborations will be developed within the coming years.

Research Topics
NAO focuses on innovative and sustainable solutions for applications in the fields of coatings, functional polymers and advanced composites. Target industries areautomotive, construction, personal care, water treatment and wind energy.

BASF has developed the new Crystal Speed Hardening™ concept for contractors and precastproducers, which increases productivity and quality in concrete production. The core product of the concept is X-SEED® 100, a unique hardening accelerator. It helps to speed concrete hardening significantly in the early stages (first 6-12hours), supporting at least double strength at low-, ambient- and high-curing temperatures. In addition, it saves time and has a positive impact on energy efficiency, offering an attractive overall cost saving potential. X-SEED® 100 consists of synthetically produced crystal seeds in liquid form that boost the hardening properties of the concrete mix. It improves the quality of the hardened cement paste and provides durability benefits.

The new “XSpark®, designed by BASF” basecoats, sparkles like thousands of stars in a cloudlesssky. This new automotive OEM coating developed by BASF experts contains extremely fine glass particles that reflect the light with greater precision, thus creating a pronounced sparkle. It glitters in a more focused and intensive manner than any other current special-effects coating.

The new material Kerdyn® is high-performance foam supplied in the form of panels thatcan be used inside rotor blades to provide additional stability. Using Baxxodur®, the two-component system of epoxy resins, can significantly speed up the manufacturing process for large rotor blades. BASF helps to make larger, heavy-duty rotor blades more durable to support the development of wind poweras a climate-friendly source of energy.

The extremely small-pore filters of the Multibore® membrane reliably intercept notonly particles but also micro-organisms such as bacteria or even viruses, thereby providing a dependable source of clean water. The patented technology combines seven individual capillaries in a highly robust fiber – an arrangement that significantly increases the membrane’s stability and eliminates the riskof fiber breakage.
