German pharmaceutical company Bayer has fired one of its employees who violated a mandatory two-week quarantine order to go for a run in Beijing, according to an official notice Tuesday.
“All employees from Bayer China should strictly follow COVID-19 prevention measures imposed by local governments,” the company’s China division said on microblogging platform Weibo. The post confirmed that the woman was a Bayer employee, and that she had been fired.
Earlier this week, a video of the woman — who is ethnically Chinese — arguing with Beijing authorities went viral online. In it, an outbreak prevention official tries to stop the woman as she is leaving her building to jog. Later, when an official confronts her outside her apartment, she yells for help, insisting that she is being harassed, and says she needs to work out so she’ll be strong enough to take care of herself if she falls ill.
To stamp out the risk of imported COVID-19 infections spreading in the city, the Beijing government announced Sunday that all travelers arriving from overseas — Chinese and foreign — would be required to stay at designated quarantine facilities for a period of 14 days.
