New data published this week suggests that just over half of Chinese students have experienced hair loss problems during their university years.
According to a survey released Monday by China Youth Network, nearly 56% of respondents from 643 colleges across the country said were suffering from the problem. Of those, a majority said they believed the issue was caused by staying up late and high stress levels.
Cai Xinsheng, a student counselor at Guangdong Medical University, told the Communist Party-affiliated outlet that hair loss among students could stem from a variety of factors, such as genetics, an unhealthy work-life balance, or even excessive junk food consumption.
In China, schools and families place enormous pressure on students to succeed academically. As a result, many young people say they feel miserable, with some even driven to run away from home or attempt suicide.
