A hospital in the northwestern Shaanxi province has apologized for publishing an “incorrect” document indicating that senior administrators were receiving higher emergency allowances than frontline medical workers.
In a statement Tuesday, the Ankang Central Hospital said it had “set inaccurate standards for the allowance” and “failed to strictly review it.” The hospital said the purpose of the list was to identify the frontline medical workers who were eligible to receive the extra allowances — allocated by the government to compensate medical staff during the COVID-19 epidemic — though it had also included an “incorrect standard” applied to staff among various departments.
The statement comes after a user on microblogging site Weibo posted photos of the document, which suggested that senior staff — including the hospital’s director — received substantially greater allowances than their frontline peers, including those who had been sent to Hubei province, the center of the COVID-19 epidemic.
According to the photos, some senior staff received allowances of 300 yuan ($43) per day for 42 days, amounting to 12,600 yuan, while many frontline medical workers received significantly less.
The hospital said it would “strictly review and reset the list (as well as) the duration and standards for the allowances,” and publish a new list.
