Eighty-four households are being moved from a mountainside in southwestern China’s Sichuan province to safer, more traditional homes elsewhere in the same county as part of a local poverty alleviation campaign, The Beijing News reported Tuesday.
The villagers, most of whom belong to China’s Yi ethnic minority group, have been living at 1,400 meters above sea level for generations. Popularly known as the “cliffside village,” the high-altitude hamlet became famous in 2016 when photos and videos of children scaling the 800-meter cliff using rattan ladders on their way to school were circulated online. Later that year, local authorities replaced the ladders with steel stairs.
The relocation project began Tuesday and is expected to take just three days. The site of the former village will be developed for local tourism. (Video: Sixth Tone)
