A decade has passed since the magnitude-7.9 Wenchuan earthquake hit southwestern China on May 12, 2008. More than 80,000 people were killed or went missing, and nearly 1 million lost their homes.

Despite the passage of time, the scars that the earthquake left on Chinese society have been slow to heal.

Sixth Tone and its sister publication, The Paper, interviewed 20 front-line photographers who reported on the earthquake and compiled 100 photos shot at the scene. The images bring memories of the disaster to life — serving as a reminder not to forget the victims’ pain, even as the nation must try to move on.
