Twenty-one students and six teachers have been diagnosed with COVID-19 in Shenzhen, the city’s health commision said Wednesday.
Of the 21 students, 16 are confirmed cases while five do not show symptoms, according to local health authorities. One of the teachers was also reported to be asymptomatic.
Though local schools remain closed, the southern city plans to resume classes on April 27. Students returning from the central Hubei province, where the coronavirus was most concentrated, must be quarantined for 14 days, while school staff are required to take nucleic acid tests, according to authorities.
On Monday, the neighboring city of Guangzhou announced it would require all 167,000 ninth and 12th graders — who are returning earlier to their middle and high schools, respectively, to prepare for exams — as well as 30,000 teachers and staff, to take free nucleic acid tests to limit the cross-infection risk in classrooms.
