An experimental COVID-19 vaccine developed by Chinese scientists has shown promising results in monkeys, suggesting its potential use in humans. The data was published Wednesday in the journal Science.
Researchers tested the vaccine in rhesus monkeys, primates that are more genetically similar to humans, compared with rodent models used in other COVID-19 vaccine trials. All of the monkeys developed immunity against the virus with no serious adverse reactions.
The inactivated vaccine, dubbed PiCoVacc, contains pieces of the virus that elicit an immune response when injected. This mock invasion trains the host’s immune system to fight the “real” virus if it’s encountered in the future. (Image: People Visual)
