Sixth Tone Agora is a series of public events, including lectures and expert roundtables, organized by Sixth Tone. It is an opportunity to meet and engage with some of contemporary China’s most interesting and innovative thinkers, academics, and writers.
Thanks to a partnership with Duoyun Books, Sixth Tone Agora will be held at Duoyun’s flagship store in the Shanghai Tower. Situated on the 52nd floor of the world’s second highest building, Duoyun offers magnificent views of Shanghai and an inspiring space for cultural and intellectual exchanges.
The next Agora event will take place from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Nov. 6, 2021. Huang Wei, a research associate at the Shanghai Library, will give a talk on the influence of Christianity and missionaries on Shanghai’s urban culture and social life.
The lecture is in English. Slots must be reserved in advance. Entry fee: 40 yuan. The fee will be refunded as a coupon for the store’s café (only valid on Nov. 6).
Abstract:
Prior to the founding of the People’s Republic in 1949, Shanghai was a center of missionary activity in China, with Christian missionaries acting as a bridge linking West and East. They were the vanguard of “Westernization” in China’s most Westernized city, using both persuasion and compulsion to get local clergy and converts to change their lifestyles in accord with Christian values and European practices. They may not have been the most dominant force in Treaty Port-era Shanghai, but their influence was — and in some ways still is — felt in almost every corner of the city.
SPEAKER:
HUANG WEI, research associate at the Shanghai Library.
