Abstract:
Traditionally, Chinese fathers were expected to be emotionally distant educators and disciplinarians to their children, in addition to their role as the undisputed heads of their households. Over the past century, however, these expectations have undergone tremendous changes, with men's parental roles departing from Confucian patriarchal norms further than their gender roles. But can the country's men really be enticed into taking a more active and equal role in the home? In this talk, Professor Li Xuan of New York University will explore the reinvention of fatherhood with Chinese characteristics.
