Mediterranean diet with extra virgin olive oil linked to weight loss

It is time to distinguish the good fat, such as in olive oil, from the bad and incorporate it back into our diets.

现在是时候区分好脂肪,比如橄榄油,和坏脂肪,并把它重新纳入我们的饮食。


A randomized controlled study in Spain (PREDIMED) has found that consuming a Mediterranean diet rich in extra virgin olive oil does not lead to weight gain.Instead, the study found that olive oil is linked to weight loss.The findings were published in the Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology journal.

西班牙的一项研究(PREDIMED)发现,地中海饮食中富含特级初榨橄榄油不会导致体重增加。相反,研究发现橄榄油与减肥有关。这项研究结果发表在《柳叶刀糖尿病和内分泌学杂志》上。


The study looked at more than 7000 participants who were divided into three groups and were tracked over five years. The first group was asked to follow an unrestricted-calorie Mediterranean diet supplemented with additional extra virgin olive oil;  The second group was asked to follow an unrestricted-calorie Mediterranean diet supplemented with additional nuts; and the third group was asked to follow a low-fat diet. More than 90% of the participants were overweight or obese at the time of the study and were between the ages of 55 and 80 years of age.

这项研究调查了7000多名参与者,他们被分成三组,并被跟踪调查了五年。第一组被要求遵循不受限制的热量地中海饮食,添加了特级初榨橄榄油;第二组被要求遵循不受限制的热量地中海饮食,添加了额外的坚果;第三组被要求遵循低脂肪饮食。超过90%的参与者在研究时超重或肥胖,年龄在55岁到80岁之间。


The results showed that all three groups lost weight, but the greatest weight loss came from the group that followed the Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra virgin olive oil – 0.88kg compared with 0.60 kg on the low-fat diet.

研究结果显示,这三组人的体重都有所下降,但体重降幅最大的是地中海饮食的那一组,他们添加了额外的特级初榨橄榄油的那一组平均减了0.88公斤,而低脂饮食的这一组平均只减了0.60公斤。



Of course, this does not mean people have the license to eat anything that contains fat. Participants in the Mediterranean groups ate foods that were high in fat but did not include red meat or butter, processed foods, sweets and desserts, or sugar-sweetened beverages. Instead, they ate fish, nuts, vegetables, fruits, and whole grains.

当然,这并不意味着人们可以吃任何含有脂肪的食物。参加地中海饮食组的参与者吃的食物脂肪含量高,但不包括红肉或黄油、加工食品、甜食和加糖饮料。相反,他们吃鱼、坚果、蔬菜、水果和全谷物。


Good fats in olive oil, nuts, and fish are beneficial for our health,and science is continually proving this to be the case. Recent studies have shown that consuming a Mediterranean diet with extra virgin olive oil leads to lower rates of cardiovascular diseases and cancer. And now there is evidence that the healthy fats in olive oil is linked to weight loss.

科学不断证明特级初榨橄榄油、坚果和鱼中的有益脂肪对我们的健康有益。最近的研究表明,地中海饮食中添加特级初榨橄榄油可以降低心血管疾病和癌症的发病率。可以说多项研究表明特级初榨橄榄油中的健康脂肪对减肥有帮助。
