Hurun Global Rich List 2024: Elon Musk Reclaims Title as World's Richest Person
Crypto, Tech Titans, and Music Industry Fuel Billionaire Wealth Growth
The "JDYD LIQUOR·Hurun Global Rich List 2024" reveals significant wealth gains across key industries such as technology, cryptocurrency, and music. Despite setbacks like the FTX crypto scandal, CZ Zhao Changpeng of Binance grew his net worth to US$18 billion after a record $4 billion U.S. fine for money laundering. Crypto industry recovery saw Coinbase founder Brian Armstrong and Ripple’s Chris Larsen increase their wealth by 50%, now at $6.4 billion and $3.4 billion respectively. Wealth concentration is rising sharply, with the threshold to enter the Hurun Top 10 exceeding $100 billion — more than tripled over the past decade. The top 10 billionaires accounted for 60% of all new global wealth this year, showing an even stronger disparity in wealth distribution. Jeff Bezos led a recovery among last year's losers, adding $67 billion following Amazon’s cloud growth. Larry Page rebounded similarly, adding $48 billion despite prior losses. The financial services sector rebounded due to expectations of falling U.S. interest rates, with Blackstone’s Steve Schwarzman gaining $11 billion, pushing him back into the top 40. The healthcare industry faced a post-pandemic slump, with over 100 healthcare billionaires seeing declines in wealth. However, charitable foundations linked to pharmaceutical firms like Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly gained value, now worth $130 billion and $70 billion respectively. Philanthropists including Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, and Michael Bloomberg made notable contributions, maintaining a presence in the public eye. Despite migration trends in China, few Chinese billionaires have relocated abroad in recent years. Only 62 mainland-born individuals are currently residing outside Greater China, mostly settled decades ago in Southeast Asia or the U.S. Notable recent relocations include Zhang Yiming of ByteDance and CZ Zhao to Singapore and Dubai, while others like Duan Yongping live in the U.S. Globally, immigration-related billionaire growth is up, with 15% on the list being immigrants — a rise from 9% five years ago. The United States remains the most popular destination, followed by the UK, Switzerland, and Singapore. Prominent figures like Elon Musk (South Africa), Sergey Brin (Russia), and Jensen Huang (Taiwan) are prime examples of immigrant success stories thriving in the U.S. Taylor Swift entered the ranks of the ultra-wealthy at age 34 with a net worth of $1.2 billion driven entirely by her music career earnings — including royalties, touring, and rights to her musical catalogue. This unique celebrity ascent highlights entertainment’s growing economic influence on par with traditional business sectors. Two newcomers joined the Hurun Global Top 10: Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg ($158 billion) and Alphabet's Larry Page ($123 billion), replacing deceased Hermes heir Bertrand Puech and L’Oreal's Francoise Bettencourt Meyers ($91 billion). Collectively, the Top 10 added $426 billion, accounting for 56% of all new global wealth this year. Among the world's wealthiest individuals:- Elon Musk, 52, reclaimed the top position with a net worth of $231 billion thanks to Tesla stock performance and SpaceX valuation surges;
- Jeff Bezos, 60, rose to second place with a net worth of $185 billion, driven by Amazon's cloud computing gains;
- Bernard Arnault, 74, fell to third place with a loss of $27 billion amid luxury sector slowdowns, although his fortune still stands at $175 billion;
- Mark Zuckerberg, 39, topped wealth gainers, increasing to $158 billion as Meta shares doubled;
- Larry Ellison, 79, rose three spots to sixth with a $144 billion fortune fueled by Oracle's cloud expansion;
- Warren Buffett, 93, retained fifth place with $144 billion and pledged over 99% of it to philanthropy through the Gates Foundation and other channels;
- Steve Ballmer, 67, climbed to seventh place with a 41% increase bringing his net worth to $143 billion;
- Bill Gates, 68, remained in eighth place at $138 billion;
- Larry Page, 50, jumped to ninth place with a 64% surge, totaling $123 billion;
- Mukesh Ambani, 66, slipped to tenth place despite a 40% increase to $115 billion.

- India experienced rapid growth adding 84 billionaires and nearly surpassing the UK;
- New York reclaimed its title as the global city with the most billionaires;

- Mumbai emerged as Asia’s fastest-growing hub, rising to third globally and hosting 26 newly minted billionaires;
- New Delhi joined the top 10 for the first time;
