Chardonnay
Possibly the most well-known of the white grapes, Chardonnay's Burgundy homeland is often cited as the apogee of its expression. But the variety has traveled the world and examples, from the sublime to the uninspiring, can be found from across the globe.
At its most basic, Chardonnay produces wines of a light golden hue, with notes of citrus, green apple, blossom and almonds or oatmeal. On the palate, Chardonnay has moderate acidity and moderate alcohol with a medium body.

Sauvignon Blanc
Sauvignon Blanc, pronounced “saw vee nyon blahnk” or “blahn” if trying to mimic the French, is one of the world’s most popular white wines. It’s made from green-skinned grapes that can grow in a range of climates to produce food-friendly wines at many price points.
Sauvignon can be crisp and grassy or juicy and tropical, yet always expresses trademark acidity. It’s refreshing, easy to identify, and there’s a style for everyone, which is why Sauvignon Blanc’s fan club keeps growing. Sauvignon Blanc has several synonyms including Sauvignon, Fumé Blanc (produced in the U.S.), Muskat-Silvaner (produced in Austria) and Feigentraube (produced in Germany).

Riesling
Riesling is a magnificent grape but a difficult one. For its many devoted admirers, it is the foremost white wine grape in the world. Riesling is one of the most prestigious grapes, but it is still something of a niche variety. This is because it is a cool climate grape, limiting the number of countries it grows in. But it is perhaps even more because it is unpredictable; riesling is often a little bit sweet, or at least not completely dry, and it’s hard to know when.
Riesling has very high acidity, higher than most other grapes. It is the acidity that makes riesling wines wonderfully fresh and delicious. But for the acidity to be balanced, many wine producers believe that some residual sugar is needed. Therefore, they stop the fermentation before all sugar has been transformed into alcohol. Sometimes, say some growers, the fermentation stops by itself before the yeast has consumed all the sugar. The sugar level can vary from one vintage to the next in a wine.

Barbera
As the third most-planted red grape in Italy, Barbera is known for its deep color, full body and low tannin. It is traditionally grown in Northern Italy, along the low slopes and valleys of the region. If not regularly pruned, the vines can produce high amounts of grapes, making it a more affordable wine to both grow and drink. If you’re a fan of Nebbiolo or Chianti, Barbera is a classic Italian alternative to sample.
When young, most Barbera wines have a bright-red cherry character, distinguished from Nebbiolo (which often overshadows Barbera) by softer tannins and a certain roundness. When matured in barrel and allowed to age in bottle for a few years, this turns to a denser, sour-cherry note.

Carmenere
Carménère is a red wine grape that is believed to have come from the Médoc wine-growing region of Bordeaux in France. This grape varietal is thought to be one of the six original red grapes from this part of France. Ironically, it is now very difficult to find any wineries producing wines from this grape.
The Carménère characteristics are that it is a late-ripening grape, and when grown in a favorable climate, it will produce powerful, deep red wines with herby notes that are not unlike Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
