As the wine became more and more popular through the ages, various governments started slowly implementing laws and guidance's that regulated their classification. Even in the ancient times, Roman winemakers started cataloging all the possible methods for creation and uses of wine, which was greatly improved when winemaking spread beyond Europe. By then, Italian and French governments started implementing strict laws which helped to authenticate traditional wines that were made in specific areas of their countries, or by using specific grapes and techniques.
Classification by color

There are different types of wines and wine styles. Basically wines can be classified into two general categories. They are white wines which are pale and red wines which have the color intensity based on the fermentation time.
Red wines

Red wines are made from red or darker coloured grape varieties. These wines get their colour by allowing the skin of the grapes to get contact with the grape juice during the wine making process. Red wines are available in different varieties and taste. The most popular red wine grapes are:
Cabernet Sauvignon
Acbernet Franc
Merlot
Pinot Noir
Primitivo
White wines

White wines are generally paler in colour and they are typically from white grape varieties. Some white wines are made from red grapes. In such a case the skin of the grapes is not allowed to have any contact with the grape juice. The most popular white wines grapes are:
Chardonnay
Sauvignon Blanc
Riesling
Pinot Gris
Sémillon
Rose wines

Rose wines are something between red and white wines and derive from the red grape varieties. A brief maceration with red grape skins is what gives these wines their colour. The more time that the skins are allowed to macerate, is reflected in a darker shade of pink in the wine. The most popular rose wine grapes are:
Pinot Noir
Grenache
Sangiovese
Primitivo (Zinfadel in the USA)
