近几年对于邮轮业来说是极具挑战性的年份，整个行业的关注点无外乎如何应对新冠疫情造成的休闲旅行中断所带来的困境。而随着疫情逐步得到控制，越来越多的邮轮船队已经开始重新提供服务，整个行业也在逐渐复苏。
与此同时，由于邮轮业直接面向公众的行业特性以及全社会对于可持续性发展的期望，邮轮运营商也逐步意识到减少环境影响的重要性。
面对政策变化和社会期望的双重压力，许多运营商的第一反应便是追求“速赢”方案——例如通过限制发动机功率和减速航行以减少碳排放。然而，在时间与资本密切相关的邮轮行业，和以休闲娱乐为导向的游船行程面前，这类“简单方法”往往并不奏效。由于限制了操作灵活性，这类短期策略必然会遇到挑战，并且无法实现“提高设计效率”的根本目标。与之相反，邮轮公司的投资选择需要切实、主动地遵循ESG（环境、社会和公司治理） 价值观和燃料节省原则，并以改善地球环境为目标。
考虑到短期内相对缺乏经济可行的解决方案，安装经过验证的清洁技术是邮轮业切实可行且安全的选择之一。特别是对于正在寻找与燃料无关、全生命周期解决方案的运营商来说，这类技术亦可为未来的船队脱碳之路奠定基础。
然而，技术供应商能否证明并展示其解决方案的有效性，对于提升清洁技术在整个邮轮行业的应用范围是至关重要的。

Cruise industry: a sea of opportunity for clean technology adoption
After an extremely challenging couple of years, during which the cruise industry’s focus has almost solely lied on managing the halt in leisure travel imposed by the pandemic, the sector’s fleet is increasingly getting back into service and resuming a more normal mode of operating. As business returns to normal, cruise operators are recognising the need to minimise their impact on the environment in line with society’s sustainability expectations; expectations that cruise is particularly susceptible to, given its public facing nature.
Facing both regulatory change and societal pressure, many operators’ first reactions will be to pursue ‘quick wins’ – such as engine power limitations and slow steaming – to reduce their carbon impact. However, in a business where time is so acutely correlated with capital, the leisure and tourism-driven itineraries of cruise ships make these supposedly ‘easier’ options unviable for cruise vessels. These short-term strategies must be challenged because they constrain operational flexibility and fail to address the underlying aim of improving design efficiency. Instead, cruise companies’ investment choices must truly and proactively be made based on ESG value, fuel savings, and doing the right thing for the planet.
Amidst a relative lack of economically viable solutions to be adopted in the near term, installing proven clean technologies is one of the safest options that the cruise industry can exercise, particularly if operators are looking for lifecycle solutions that are fuel agnostic and will complement the decarbonisation transition of fleets into the future.
To increase uptake of clean technologies across cruise, it’s crucial that manufacturers prove their claims and show the effectiveness of their solutions.
This has been Silverstream’s approach for more than a decade. Our air lubrication technology, the Silverstream® System, has been proven to perform in all sea conditions. We have a long heritage working with the cruise sector; two of our first installations were with Princess Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line. We now have 70 orders – under contract, in-build or in-service – including deals with major players such as Maersk, MSC, Shell, Grimaldi, and Vale, amongst others. These include a recent order with Carnival Corporation, which is set to generate net fuel and emissions savings of more than 5% for the vessels on which our technology is installed.
Today, we are forging an operational and commercial blueprint for installing our technology in the cruise market that addresses the unique demands and challenges of the sector. This blueprint is based on alleviating pressures for cruise lines to install technologies on vessels, including bringing in place bespoke project teams and creating unique supply chain arrangements that suit the way that cruise operates.
