As life slowly returns back to normal, people are crawling out of their caves – and while we might have perfected our communication skills online, we may be a bit rusty when we find ourselves face-to-face with an actual human. Use these tips to return or even improve your human interaction and create an overall lasting connection.
1 Listen to people
Listen to understand, ask questions and give your utmost attention to those speaking. As most try to be boisterous and the loudest in the room, someone who listens will not go unnoticed. Show your listening skills by implementing appropriate body language as stipulated in #6 below.
2 Remember the stories
Whether it’s a pet’s name, hobbies, an exciting trip to the Maldives, or a life-changing moment – pay attention and REMEMBER. If you need some help in this department (as most of us do) jot down a few notes. This becomes useful when you need to follow up for networking purposes. You will make people surprisingly happy that you listened and remembered what they said.

4 Set and track your goals
If you have inter-personal or social networking goals for yourself, be your own competitor, your own referee and your own winner. Note down whether you flourish in large groups or excel better 1-on-1, aim to make 5 new connections this month or have social behaviour goals. Do this by tracking your progress, logging your tasks and deadlines with a bullet journal (see above).
5 Practice positivity
People are naturally drawn to cheerful, positive people. When complaining often, sounding ironic or generally exhaling negativity, others start running for the hills. Rather remain a delight and proceed with optimism. Record yourself and practice your confidence and upbeat tone and you can ensure yourself to be a natural gravitation for people.
6 Pay attention to your body language
Look the part as much as you sound it by monitoring and correcting your body language before you enter social settings. Don’t fold your arms, smile, make eye contact (frequently but not too intensely), angle your body directionally to the other person and keep your head up. With any language, practice makes perfect – so don’t be afraid to look in the mirror to help yourself look instantly approachable.
7 Don’t forget to bring the love
Be yourself, be interested and be present. Don’t forget to compliment people, admire and respect them and don’t judge them. Social settings provide beautiful moments, where people can connect, engage, learn, be kind and appreciate each other. One of the hacks that allow all of the abovementioned tips to be successful – be wholly yourself, your lovely self.
