Crimson Pangolin is a Chinese Botanical Craft Gin brand that launched in December 2017. It was founded by two expats living in China, Helena Kidacka from England and David Munoz from Colombia. Helena, a massive gin lover, wanted to create a Chinese gin using exclusively Chinese botanicals.

Crimson Pangolin is distilled and bottled in Changsha, Hunan province. Changsha has some of the cleanest water in China, and some of the richest botanical ingredients. The team initially chose Changsha for its pure water and Hunan province's rich variety of ingredients and botanicals, such as peppercorns. They were also intrigued by the historical significance of the area - Mao Zedong hails from Hunan and the area is well known for its breathtaking landscapes.

In their initial developmental stage, the Crimson Pangolin team created 16 different distillations and flavors, which were then tested throughout Shanghai by bartenders and industry professionals. After a lot of trial and error, the flavors were narrowed down to one, their Black Goji flavor. One year later they launched their Peach Rose edition, and the Oak Barrel edition followed shortly after.

And what exactly is a Pangolin anyways? A pangolin is an insect-eating mammal with large, hard scales that protect it from predators and give it a very unique appearance. The species is the most trafficked animal in the world, as its scales and meat are highly prized in China, Vietnam and Africa for medicine. As a result, they are considered a threatened species and some species have already gone extinct. Crimson Pangolin hosts quarterly events to raise awareness and help protect these special creatures, donating the proceeds to Save Vietnam's Wildlife, a non-profit organization dedicated to help recover threatened animal species in Vietnam.

There's a good chance you're already familiar with the Crimson Pangolin brand if you enjoy going to bars and restaurants in China. Crimson Pangolin gins are featured in many new cocktail recipes, and is available in multiple online stores. In 2019, Crimson Pangolin was the first locally produced gin to officially export to Europe, shipping one pallet to Austria and another to Eastern Europe.
