Weather is changing, windows are opening, Sunday Funday at YKL is a thing yet again…
In preparation for Spring, perhaps THE most glorious time in Shanghai apart from my personal favorite month of October, I’ve put together a list of all of the fun things that I need, and perhaps you need, too, for the change of season. The focus is loosely women, though in reality, it’s a list compiled by a woman, with input from women, but for anyone.

In my opinion, every home needs a bar. The mantle over my typically-Chinese faux fireplace has temporarily filled this position, but as my collection rapidly expands I’m reevaluating the situation. My first thought was to act on my dream of owning a globe bar - think Mad Men - but it’s much more challenging than I thought to find one that’s even the slightest bit attractive. Therefore, opted for this rustic, Restoration Hardware-esque piece. I think it may be too big for my apartment, but really only one way to find out.

Phryne Fisher is likely my *latest* favorite female protagonist in literature and now television. Same song and dance with the private detective story, but Phryne is a highly-fashionable, witty, lover-taking, gun-carrying fighter of crime who really doesn’t adhere to the typical female role of 1920s Australia. Definitely worth a watch.

I’m always shocked by the difference a powerful hairdryer makes. My 50RMB, hair-tangling, rather dangerous dryer should be put in the trash as I spend three times as long only to achieve slightly better than “towel-dried” hair.This was unanimous among contributors. Salon-quality really is the way to go.

I love cooking, entertaining, and really channeling my inner Kinfolk host. I’m a sucker for slightly pretentious home goods - see #1 - and Kinfolk really lets me explore that. Think floral T-shirt wearing bearded-men grilling corn in a Brooklyn concrete backyard and a middle-aged British man eating a crumpet with his King Charles Cavalier. The recipes are killer, too.

Or denim. But an every day Spring jacket is a must-have. This faux leather jacket is shockingly cheap - but as usual, the “what if” of potentially ordering a brilliant Korean coat for only USD25 has me “Adding to Cart.”

Colored-mirrored lenses are definitely trending, and I’m 100% on board. I’ve gotten down with the bright blue lenses, and am looking into expanding into pastels. You can never have enough pairs of cheap sunglasses. Also, croakies. Buy croakies.

I’m a firm believer that women should also be recognized as capable Grill masters. While I don’t find many things sexier than a beer-sipping gentleman manning the BBQ, I want to believe that a woman confidently getting a good char on a bell pepper or presenting a medium-rare steak is just as hot.

Using my university days playing Bocce on the college green as inspiration, I suggest Fuxing Park barbeque, Bocce and beers. While Bocce in its honest form as developed by the Italians requires a court, I say forget about that, and just enjoy the sun and sport!
