Affordable Products For Sensitive Skin

Many of us have sensitive skin that can easily get irritated and redden due to some of the ingredients found in common skincare products. The items below are all fragrance and irritant free. The Ordinary Acne Prevention/Treatment

The Ordinary is a Canadian brand that offers active ingredients for a very affordable price, and has revolutionized the skin care industry. If you don't know much about active ingredients and their different roles, we are here to help. Dr. Dray recommends the following solutions and explains exactly what benefits they bring to your skin.

The Ordinary 5% Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG

The caffeine in this solution reduces morning puffiness and dark circles. Caffeine is also anti inflammatory, making it great for reducing irritation. The EGCG in this solution is a potent antioxidant that improves skin photo damage (wrinkles, freckles, pigmentation).

The Ordinary AHA BHA Peeling Solution

This is an exfoliating solution based on alpha- and beta-hydroxy acids, containing salicylic acid. When used weekly and kept on for 10 minutes, this solution conceals dullness and visible congested pores, and smoothes the skin texture.

Blackhead Treatment & Prevention

A blackhead is a collection of built up dirt, oil and dead skin cells in a pore, which oxidizes and turns black when in contact with the air.

Dr. Dray has many suggestions for how to deal with blackheads. Firstly, blackhead prone skin should be washed with a gentle cleanser twice a day, since blackheads are less likely to develop in skin that isn't greasy or sweaty. However, make sure to use an oil-free moisturizer (the CeraVe ones recommended above are oil-free) after each wash!

She also points out that sun exposure is a large contributing factor to the development of blackheads, so make sure not to skip your oil-free sunscreen (the Elta MD sunscreen recommended below is oil-free)!

Next, Dr. Dray recommends chemically exfoliating the face 2-3 times a week. If your oily skin is not sensitive, consider choosing a leave on exfoliator. If your skin is sensitive, consider using an exfoliating ingredient in a face wash or a mask. The best exfoliating ingredient is salicylic acid. A great exfoliant containing salicylic acid is recommended below. This acid does not only remove black and whiteheads, but it also prevents them from occurring again!

This product contains the magical salicylic acid that will bring up all your pore clogging material to the surface and remove it, unclogging your pores. It will also smoothen your skin tone without using any drying alcohols, which makes it is perfect for combination skin. Apply it to your skin after cleansing and toning, and leave it on for a few minutes before continuing with sunscreen.

Niacinamide (vitamin B3) is an antioxidant that helps to reduce oil production, redness, hyperpigmentation and large pores. The ingredient is moisturizing and improves the skin's moisture barrier. Use this after cleansing and toning, followed by a moisturizer.

Anti-Aging Skin Care

Dr. Dray reminds us that being obsessed with concealing all signs of aging is bad for your mental health, and not the objective of an anti-aging skin care routine. Instead, the goal should be to keep your skin healthy and functional long-term. It is a good idea to start using skincare products in your 20s.

Wash your face with a face wash daily and apply sunscreen to the neck and hands, wear sun protective clothing (hats, scarves, gloves). As our planet's ozone layer thins over time, more UV rays penetrate our atmosphere. This makes us more susceptible to sun's harmful rays - UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays can penetrate deeply into the skin, causing skin cells to age prematurely, resulting in wrinkles and sun spots. On the other hand, UVB rays can cause sunburn, skin cancer and can even damage the skin's DNA. Therefore, SPF is our BFF!

Create a moisture barrier by moisturizing every night, and get good quality sleep. Combined with these tips, these products will go a long way.
