Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is a major holiday in a few countries in Asia, and is most prominently celebrated in China. This New Year begins on February 15th, and marks the year of the Dog.

Within China, regional customs and traditions concerning the celebration of the Chinese New Year vary widely. So, what's the best way to celebrate the most important holiday in China? Read on to find out!

The lantern is a symbol of joy and good fortune in Chinese culture. During Chinese New Year, hanging a red lantern on your front door is also believed to drive off bad luck.

SHOP CHINESE LANTERNS

According to tradition, firecrackers are lit in front of houses and stores to scare away evil spirits. But these days, they contribute to air pollution, so we’d recommend a paper option. They will still add to the lively atmosphere of Chinese New Year festivities, while keeping it safe for everyone!

SHOP PAPER FIRECRACKERS

New Year good wishes are usually posted in pairs (couplets), as even numbers are associated with good luck and auspiciousness in Chinese culture. Couplets are brush works of Chinese calligraphy, traditionally painted in black ink on red paper.

SHOP DOOR COUPLETS

Similar to New Year couplets, paper cuttings are typically hung at 45° with the inverted Chinese character 福 (fú /foo) on or over doors. The phrase “upside-down Fú” sounds nearly identical to the phrase “Good luck arrives”. Pasting the character upside-down on a door or doorpost thus translates into a wish for prosperity to descend upon a dwelling.

SHOP FU CHARACTERS

Chinese people love the color red, and regard red as a symbol of energy, happiness and good luck. Sending red envelopes is a wonderful way to send good wishes (and most importantly, cash money) to friends and family!
