If you've been living in China, you are no doubt already familiar with WeChat Pay. It's the fastest and most convenient way to pay for anything in China, and almost makes you feel like you aren't spending real money...

Let's just keep pretending that's really the case.

The exciting news is that WeChat now accepts Western credit cards from VISA, Discover, Diner's Club International, JCB and Mastercard. Huzzah!

To get started,make sure you are using the most updated version of WeChat on your phoneand follow the steps below!

Go to Me > Services > Wallet

If you have not yet activated your WeChat Pay (Weixin Pay), click on Me > Settings > General > Tools > Weixin Pay > Enable

InWallet, clickCards. Here you can see any cards you currently have added. Simply click on Add a Card, fill in the details and you are all set!

Are there any limitations?

Anyone can use this, including tourists! However, the version of WeChat available on GooglePlay does not seem to work yet. It keeps prompting users to update to a new version, but no such version is available. As a workaround, WeChat Pay’s English customer service hotline (95017) suggests downloading the APK file directly from its site via this link.

WeChat charges no transaction fees if the total charge is equal to or less than 200 yuan. For amounts over 200 yuan, the fee is 3%.

The maximum permissible charge is 6,000 yuan in a single transaction. The current yearly limit per account is 60,000 yuan.
