鱼油，是一种从多脂鱼类中提取的油脂，富含Omega-3脂肪酸，常见的DHA和EPA就属于鱼油中Omega-3脂肪酸。对宠物而言，想要保持健康的状态就需要各种脂肪酸。而Omega-3是属于宠物自身无法合成，必需从外界获取的营养。所以，补充Omega-3脂肪酸是鱼油的最主要用途。
1. 皮肤病
Omega-3脂肪酸能有效舒缓犬猫的皮肤干燥、发痒症状，减少皮屑脱落，尤其在干燥的冬天，应给宠物适当补充Omega-3脂肪酸[1,2]。
2. 高脂血症

炎症性肠病是猫的常见病，由肠粘膜对共生菌或饮食成分耐受性降低引起，表现为慢性胃肠道症状。Omega-3可作为猫炎症性肠病的辅助治疗手段[5]。
5. 肾病
对患有慢性肾病的猫来说，Omega-3脂肪酸能改善肾小球滤过率和血流。富含Omega-3脂肪酸的饮食都能减缓炎症，降血压，减少蛋白尿[6]，保护肾脏，对肾功能不全的狗狗尤为有益[7]。
6. 关节病
实验表明，对于患有关节炎的狗狗，在长期食用富含Omega-3脂肪酸的食物后，静止站立和行走的能力都得到了提高[8]。不仅如此，Omega-3脂肪酸的摄入还能改善体重，减轻关节炎患犬的负重[9]。
7. 癌症
在抗肿瘤治疗期间补充Omega-3脂肪酸能减轻体重丢失，保护肌肉。有报道称，Omega-3脂肪酸还能作为肿瘤化疗的佐剂，减轻治疗毒性[10]。Omega-3脂肪酸还能抑制肿瘤生长和转移，研究证明其能有效提高淋巴瘤患犬的生存时间[11]。
