珩磨是汽车、液压与机械工程领域不可或缺的关键精加工工艺。由于珩磨工具拥有特殊的结构,它能在工件表面形成特有的交叉线样式的加工纹理,这种纹理有助于有效储存润滑油,从而显著降低零件在运动中的摩擦与磨损,因此珩磨是提升气缸、液压缸等零件耐用性和可靠性的关键精加工工序。在具体应用中,珩磨技术确保了发动机缸孔、变速箱与制动缸体的极高尺寸精度与表面光洁度,实现动力总成的最佳性能;在液压与气动系统中,它保障了运行平稳性与密封可靠性。可以说,珩磨直接决定着高端核心零部件的性能与寿命


然而,想要获得如此高质量的珩磨效果,在传统生产模式下面临着效率成本的双重挑战。传统工艺通常需分步进行:先在镗床或加工中心完成半精加工,再将工件转移至专用珩磨机进行精加工。这种多工序多设备的模式不仅拉长了生产周期,还增加了工件装夹、流转的时间,更可能因多次装夹引入累积误差,影响最终的形位精度。不仅如此,企业往往面临两难选择:投入高昂成本购置维护专用珩磨设备,或将核心工序外包——前者意味着沉重的资产负担,后者则伴随着交期延长工艺外泄质量不可控的风险。

Honing is a mission-critical finishing process across the automotive, hydraulic, and mechanical engineering sectors. Its unique tooling generates a distinctive crosshatch pattern on workpiece surfaces. This texture acts as a micro-reservoir for lubricant, drastically reducing friction and wear between moving parts. As a result, honing is essential for maximizing the durability, reliability, and service life of high-precision parts like cylinders and hydraulic barrels. In practice, honing delivers the extreme dimensional accuracy and superior surface finish required for cylinder bores in engines, gearboxes, and brake cylinders—directly enabling peak powertrain performance. In hydraulic and pneumatic systems, it ensures seamless operation and reliable sealing. Ultimately, the quality of the honing process is a decisive factor in the performance and longevity of critical parts.

Yet, achieving this quality traditionally imposed an efficiency-cost trade-off. The standard multi-step process—semi-finishing on one machine, then transferring to a dedicated honing machine—extends cycles with added handling and increases the risk of errors from re-fixturing. Manufacturers face a tough choice: invest in costly dedicated equipment and its upkeep, or outsource and lose control, extending lead times and assuming quality risks.

The company name "URMA" originates from the combination of Urs and Markus, the names of the two sons of founder Willy Berner. In 1962, he established the company in Rupperswil, Switzerland, embedding a family legacy that continues today. For over six decades, URMA has focused on one mission: advancing precision hole machining tools. 

That mission is built on a foundation of patented innovation. In 1977, URMA introduced the first double cutter head with patented counter supported insert holders. In 1985, the world’s first balanceable fine boring head was patented. Breakthroughs continued with the world’s smallest patented modular replaceable insert reaming system in 2016 and the 2023 launch of a new quick-change system and MX diamond face milling cutter. These innovations—alongside its efficient quick change modular reamer system and custom tooling expertise—earned URMA the top 5 Swiss Made awards in 2019 and solidified its role as a trusted partner to leaders in automotive, hydraulics, mechanical engineering, and aerospace.

In this interview, Mr. Scofield LuManaging Director of URMA Trading (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., shared that URMA’s connection with China is deep and pragmatic. Since entering China in 2003, URMA has built a technical service center and warehouse in Shanghai, with teams stationed in key industrial regions including BeijingTianjinXi’anHenan, and Chongqing. Scofield noted, "The automationdigitalization, and smart-factory transformation of Chinese manufacturing are placing unprecedented new demands on the cutting-tool sector." Simply chasing cutting efficiency is no longer enough. What manufacturers urgently need today is longer tool life, less unplanned downtime, better lifespan stability, and—most crucially—predictable tool life.

他在采访当日告诉我们,在复杂的真实工况中,机床状态、夹具精度、冷却液效果乃至材料本身的波动,都会显著影响刀具的实际表现。市场上部分产品寿命往往呈现较大的不确定性。例如,在同等条件下,一些产品标称能加工1000余件,但实际表现可能在300至500件之间大幅波动。这种不确定性迫使生产过程中必须频繁停机检测刀具状态,形成了充满不确定性的“黄灯加工”模式,严重干扰连续生产节奏,并带来隐蔽的质量风险和损失。

He explained that in real-world production environments, variables like machine condition, fixture accuracy, coolant effectiveness, and material variations can significantly impact actual tool performance. Many alternative tools often show considerable inconsistency in lifespan: a product rated for 1,000 parts might actually produce only 300–500 under the same conditions. This unpredictability forces frequent stoppages to check tool status, creating an uncertain "yellow-light" machining mode that severely disrupts continuous production and introduces hidden quality risks and losses.

In contrast, URMA delivers distinctly superior value in these critical dimensions. Under identical operating conditions, URMA tools consistently achieve a reliably attainable and highly predictable result. It means URMA offers not only a tool life several times that of ordinary products, but also a level of stability they cannot match.

The direct benefit of this advantage is transformative: it shifts production from a "yellow-light" mode—requiring frequent pauses and verification—to a smooth, continuous, and precisely plannable "green-light" process. Customers are freed from worrying about drastic fluctuations in tool life, enabling a significant reduction in unplanned downtime, an increase in Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), and the establishment of production scheduling and quality control on a foundation of high certainty.
