Update on the airport explosions in Brussels, Belgium
As reported in a recent CWT Alert, authorities have raised the national threat level to 4, the highest on Belgium's 4-tier scale system.
Air: Belgian and European civil aviation authorities have confirmed that Brussels Zaventem Airport (BRU) will remain closed through at least 0001 on March 24. All arriving and departing flights are cancelled on March 23.
Public Transportation: The Brussels transport operator STIB has confirmed that metro lines 2 and 6 have begun to resume operations, as have some tram and Noctis bus services. Officials have not provided a timeline for the full resumption of public transit services.
Rail: Brussels train stations have reopened as of 1600, with the exception of Brussels-Schuman, Brussels-Congres, and Brussels-Chapelle stations. Services to and from BRU via Brussels-National-Luchthaven have been canceled.
International Rail: Eurostar has resumed limited operations on the Brussels-Lille route, after having suspended service in the aftermath of the attacks. Limited Thalys services are scheduled between Brussels and Paris for the evening of March 22. Altered schedules are also likely on TGV, InterCity, and ICE trains to and from neighboring countries.
Borders: The closure of Belgium's international borders will cause long queues of vehicles to form at major border crossings, though there have been no reports that frontiers are entirely sealed to either passenger or commercial traffic.
CWT China reminds travelers who have plans to go to Belgium to pay close attention to local safety situations as well as all transportation status, and arrange travel accordingly. For travelers already in Belgium, please take extra precaution to ensure personal safety, avoid any unnecessary outdoor activities or crowded places.
