Volcanic Activity Causing Ngurah Rai and Lombok Airport Closures
As reported in a recent CWT Alert, Indonesian authorities have temporarily closed Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar, Bali and Lombok International Airport on November 3 due to volcanic ash from Mount Barujari in Lombok. Volcanologists have warned that the eruption might not have finished. Depending on weather conditions, volcanic ash from Mount Barujari could also affect airports in nearby East Java. Lingering flight disruptions might be expected after the affected airports resume operations, as the backlog of passengers is cleared and aircraft repositioned.
Australian carriers Virgin Australia and Jetstar continue to cancel flights to and from Denpasar on November 4. Other airlines such as SilkAir said it would continue to monitor the situation before making any decisions. Carriers can independently decide what thresholds must be met to operate aircraft.
