Severe air pollution in northeast China
As reported in a recent CWT Alert, The China Meteorological Administration (CMA) is forecasting that severe air pollution in northeast China including Beijing, Tianjin, and parts of Hebei Province, will likely remain in the area until at least December 12. Previous forecasts predicted that air quality would improve by December 9 due to a cold front entering the region.
Beijing will remain under a red air pollution alert until at least 1200 December 10, this is the first time the Beijing's Municipal Environmental Monitoring Center has issued a red alert for air pollution since a new, four-tiered system was introduced in 2013. Under the red alert, private vehicle use is restricted within the municipality; only vehicles with even-numbered plates may drive on even calendar days, and odd-numbered plates on odd days. All outdoor construction projects are suspended. The government has advised schools throughout the Beijing municipality to remain closed through December 10, and municipal officials have ordered thousands of factories in the capital region to cease operations through at least December 10. The closures are unlikely to lead to severe supply chain disruptions, but some time-sensitive deliveries and orders may be delayed.
The CMA is maintaining orange warnings - the second highest level - for Tianjin and parts of Hebei Province.
Severe air pollution continues significantly to reduce visibility across the region. Flight disruptions are possible at Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) and other regional airports, especially during the overnight and early morning hours when relative humidity is high. Ground travel disruptions are also likely; officials may close roadways in some areas until air quality improves, especially in Hebei and outlying areas of Tianjin and Beijing. Rail service in capital region will likely be delayed due to the reduced visibility.
CWT China reminds travelers already in or have plans to travel to the above areas, to pay close attention to the air pollution alert. Take extra precaution to ensure personal safety and arrange travel accordingly.
