Flooding in central and south-central U.S.
As reported in a recent CWT Alert, heavy rainfall in central and south-central U.S. has produced a severe threat of flooding in the low-lying areas along the Mississippi River and its tributaries. Localized flooding is forecast for parts of Kentucky, Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas through the middle of January.
High population areas located along the Mississippi River that are likely to experience more flooding include:
Memphis, Tenn. during January 7-8
Vicksburg, Miss. during January 14-18
Natchez, Miss. during January 18-19
Baton Rouge, La. during January 19-22
Floodwaters might make runways inoperable, causing flight disruptions at area airports including those serving St. Louis (STL), Memphis (MEM), Little Rock (LIT), and Baton Rouge (BTR).
