Update on transportation strikes in France
As reported in a recent CWT Alert, several French unions continue to stage a campaign of nationwide strikes and demonstrations against pending labor reforms. As of late June 1, the following labor actions were ongoing or anticipated.
Aviation
France's largest union of civil aviation workers, the USAC, has announced a nationwide strike on June 2.
Two of France's largest civil aviation unions - representing around 70 percent of all air traffic controllers (ATCs) - have canceled strike notices valid 0600 June 3-0600 June 6.
A public sector strike during 0600 June 2-0600 June 3 is expected to affect some operations at airports nationwide. At Paris Orly Airport (ORY), airlines have preemptively cancelled 10 percent of all flights.
Staff at Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) have threatened to strike on June 7, potentially disrupting airport operations. The strike will be accompanied by a demonstration of airport workers beginning at 0930 in the departures level of Terminal 2E.
The second largest union of Air France (AF) pilots, the SPAF, has called on members to strike for at least two days from June 11. The largest pilots' union, the SNPL, has also threatened a six-day strike, though no further details were available as of June 1.
Rail
All four labor unions representing National Society of French Railways (SNCF) workers are participating in indefinite, rolling strikes nationwide.
Public Transit
Autonomous Operator of Parisian Transports (RATP) workers belonging to CGT are set to begin an indefinite strike on June 2. The walkout is unlikely to directly affect metro and bus services in the greater Paris area, though some commuter rail (RER) services - including lines to/from Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) - could experience disruptions. Expect crowding on available mass transit services, especially during rush hours.
A second union, SUD, is calling members employed by the RATP to strike indefinitely from June 10. Public transit disruptions will probably worsen as more labor groups call workers to walk off the job.
CWT China reminds travelers already in or have plans to travel to France, to pay close attention to the status of the strikes and arrange travel accordingly.
