China's railway network is expanding quickly, with intensive construction taking place in recent years. After the adjustment to the network map at the beginning of 2017, with the Shanghai to Kunming line now being fully operational, China Railway Corporation announced on 16 April 2017that it will further improve the high speed train network.
More high speed trains coming into use
25.5 additional pairs of high speed trains were introduced following network improvements, bringing the total number of high speed trains in China to 3,615 pairs. This means that the busiest lines between Shanghai-Kunming, Hangzhou-Shenzhen, Nanning-Guangzhou, Guiyang to Guangzhou, Nanjing to Chengdu, Beijing to Guangzhou are now able to handle much greater capacity.
Operation time of several lines shortened
In addition to a larger capacity of the railway system, faster train services have been introduced on some routes. For example, travelling from Shanghai to Chengdu now only takes 14 hours and 21min. You can also now travel from Shanghai to Chongqing in just 12 hours.
Adjustment of selected ticket prices
As southeast coastal areas, where high speed trains go through, are relatively developed, there is a strong demand from residents to use the rail network, meaning that ticket prices are rising. From 21 April 2017, ticket prices of high speed trains passing though southeast coastal areas have been adjusted. As reported by China Railway Corporation, the price adjustment was targeted only at high speed trains passing though southeast coastal areas, whose speed is between 200-250 km/h. This mainly impacts three lines: Shanghai-Hangzhou, Hangzhou-Ningbo, and Ningbo-Shenzhen. The price of second class cabin fares rose by 30% and first class cabin fares rose by 70%.
Below shows you what to take note of when entering/leaving the stations with your ID card:
You can use your second generation ID directly (no need to take the paper ticket) when travelling on the Beijing-Shanghai, Hefei-Bengbu, Shanghai-Nanjing, Shanghai-Hangzhou, Hangzhou- Ningbo, Ningbo-Taizhou-Wenzhou lines.
If you need to board or embark the train before the final destination, you will need to present a paper ticket, as well as your ID.
If you need to claim your ticket expense, you need take your original ID card to the ticket vending machine, or the ticket windows to get your paper tickets within 31 days from the date of travel. If your ID card cannot be identified, you will need to provide your booking reference number to the ticket window for the paper ticket.
