Tipping: it’s as American as apple pie. An apple pie that costs 15% more than you thought it would. Unlike, say, the United Kingdom, in which tipped employees are paid the same minimum wage as non-tipped employees, in the United States tipped workers make much less per hour. Money from tips is expected to provide a substantial amount of a tipped employee’s overall wage. So tipping in the U.S. isn’t just a nice thing to do, it’s pretty darn important.

Just so we’re clear, there are no laws saying you have to tip. You won’t cause an international incident over a tipping problem – you may just upset whoever has been serving you.

In the United States, you are expected to tip waiters, taxi drivers, bartenders, hairdressers and barbers, and your late-night-emergency-I’m-so-hungry-pizza delivery guy (or any delivery guy at any time, for that matter).

The standard amount is 15%. And it’s encouraged to give 20% or more to reward great service. Feel free to be generous!

For larger groups at restaurants, the tip (also called gratuity) is often included in the bill, so keep an eye out for more specific instructions.
