汉译英实用技能训练—名词从句

名词性从句就是在句子中起到定语作用的从句，它能够当主语、宾语、表语、同位语等。在汉译英中，有些句子结构能够很容易辨别出可以使用名词性从句。
例：
他说什么我一点都不明白。
What he said made no sense to me at all.（名词从句当主语）
我认为这个方案在经济上行不通。
I think this plan is financially unfeasible.（名词从句当宾语）
这是她起初和我们接触的原因。
This is why she got in touch with us in the first place.（名词从句当表语）
然而有时候，我们需要使用名词从句，摆脱汉语的束缚，进行通顺地翻译。
Is this the result of your five-year research？（不用名词从句）
Is this what you have come up with after five years of research?（使用名词从句）
Thinking he might come back, she felt a glimmer of hope.（名词从句当宾语）
The thought that she might come back gave her a glimmer of hope.（名词从句当同位语）
1. I don’t understand why you should get so angry at something so trivial.
2. I have no idea why you got so angry about such a small matter.
3. It baffles me why you hit the roof because of such a trifle.
Baffle v. 使xx困惑
Hit the roof 勃然大怒
Trifle 小事，琐碎
董事们一致认为，除非奇迹发生，公司难逃倒闭的命运。
Directors think the company will go bankrupt unless a miracle happens.（普通译法）
Directors all agree that nothing but a miracle could save the company from bankruptcy.
So he did this without my knowledge.（简单句译文）
So this is what he did behind my back.（名词从句译文）
在译文1中，也可以把心目中换成in the eyes of
1. Nowadays the superheroes in children’s eyes are often regarded with disapproval by their parents.
2. Nowadays what children regard as superheroes are often looked upon with distaste(厌恶) by their parents.
3. Today’s parents usually have a low opinion of what their children regard as superheroes.
前沿中概括论述了读者需要预先掌握什么知识才能透彻理解本书所探讨的课题。
The introduction outlines what prior knowledge is required of readers for a thorough understanding of the topics discussed in the book.（名词从句）
The introduction outlines the knowledge readers need in advance in order to thoroughly understand the topics discussed in the book.（形容词从句）
他在这么短的时间里有这么大的进步，真令人难以置信。
In such a short time he has made such great progress which is truly incredible.
He has made such great progress in such as a short time, something that is truly incredible.
It is so incredible that he has made such great progress in such a short time.
I couldn’t care whether they come.
Whether they come makes no difference to me.
It makes no difference to me whether they come.
有了她那种经历，对家庭生活不再存什么幻想是很自然的事。
It is natural that she should have no more illusions about family life after what she has gone through.
2. “ 她那种经历” 可以翻译成of her experience。
It makes sense that a woman of her experience should have no more illusions about family life.
It is natural for a woman of her experience to become totally disillusioned about family life.
你可以按照最适合你的方式，选择用现金、支票或者信用卡支付。
You can choose to pay in the way most suitable for you – in cash, by check, or credit card.
You can pay in cash, by check or credit card, whichever suits you best.
1. 基本译法，按照原文逻辑关系，用并列的形式翻译。
He thought it was a fraud and would not get involved in it.
He did not want to get involved in what he considered to be a fraud.
He wants to be no part of what he believed to be a scam.
这家包装公司声称其所有产品都可以自然降解，但许多环境学家对此表示怀疑。
This packaging company claims that their products are all biodegradable, but many environmental scientists expressed their doubts.
Many environmental experts doubts the packaging company’s claim that all their products are biodegradable.
