This installment is based on Drew Jones, Todd Sundsted and Tony Bacigalupo's I'm Outta Here: How Co-Working Is Making the Office Obsolete.

New coworking spaces are popping up daily in cities all around the world. This begs the question: are traditional offices obsolete?

Probably not, but they are certainly undergoing a radical change, as workers and managers realize the benefits of working in collaborative environments that encourage sharing and socializing, both within the company and with other companies that inhabit the same space.

  I'm Outta Here

Coworking spaces are popping up everywhere, from New York to Bangalore. They provide desks to rent, conference rooms, broadband access, office equipment, social spaces and more.Freelancers, entrepreneurs, writers and telecommuters are taking advantage of them in cities from Los Angeles to London.

Not only is it cheaper to rent a desk than an office, but unlike traditional office suites, coworking facilities encourage like-minded people to socialize and collaborate. It's all about sharing. If you have a problem, the person sitting next to you may be able to help you solve it.

Now even big companies are getting in on the action. Plantronics recently told a third of its 500 employees in Santa Cruz that they could either work from home, commute, or join a coworking space.AT&T is placing dozens of its best researchers, product developers and technologist into coworking spaces. The goal is to foster innovation and get products to market faster.

Coworking can make big companies act more like nimble startups. Separating employees from the mother ship gives them freedom to think and act differently, and exposes them to all sorts of new ideas they otherwise wouldn't encounter.

In London, Google is backing a coworking campus that reserves one floor for Google employees and two for coworking facilities. It's all about meeting smart people and creating serendipitous interactions that lead to new ideas. Proximity breeds innovation. Who you sit next to will probably have more influence on how you think than anything a company can do or say.

Zappos is taking it a step further, with the $350 million attempt to blur the lines between office, coworking and city. The idea is to relocate 1,400 Zappos employees from their suburban campus to a building in downtown Las Vegas where the entire first floor is a coworking space. The goal is to get Zappos employees interacting with startups.

After this, Zappos plans to transform every bar and restaurant nearby into an extension of this space, where employees can mingle with startups, hold meetings and collaborate. And this is only the beginning of a major trend towards openness and interaction in the workplace.
