If a startup uses growth hacking and viral loops, could it someday become a decacorn? On the other hand, if the company doesnt engage in dogfooding, could it turn into an acqui-hire or even a unicorpse?

If thats gibberish to you, a new book may help: “Valley Speak: Deciphering the Jargon of Silicon Valley” by the husband-and-wife team of Rochelle Kopp and Steven Ganz.

The language of Silicon Valley is jargon-laden enough to justify such a lexicon for the uninitiated. As the authors note, “the regions unique business culture seems to breed new words—cool, geeky and often inane words.” And all those new words often serve to create “an aura of impenetrability.”

The book grew out of Ms. Kopps work consulting for business clients in Japan who wanted help breaking into American tech culture. When she and her husband realized there was no book that explained the peculiar vocabulary of “the Valley,” they set about writing their own, drawing on Mr. Ganzs experience working with several startups.

This linguistic churn isnt surprising given the ever-changing nature of tech startups, which can live or die according to the vagaries of venture-capital funding and heavy competition.

Some of the lingo puts a positive spin on the scarce resources available to most new startups. Growth hacking, for instance, describes how a company can seek to gain exposure without a big marketing budget, leveraging whatever resources it can muster up. They might include viral loops, or “product features through which one user easily shares content with others.”

Dogfooding means “using your own product or service internally as a way to validate its quality and capabilities.” It comes from the concept of “eating your own dogfood,” as used in a 1988 memo by a manager at Microsoft.

The fate of a startup may be as an acqui-hire, an odd blend of “acquisition” and “hire” introduced in a 2005 blog post by Rex Hammock. The term describes what happens when a large company buys up a smaller firm to procure its personnel.

A unicorn, as I discussed in a column last year, is a startup with a valuation of a billion dollars or more. But that is now passe: The new gold standard is the decacorn, or a $10 billion valuation. (A recent episode of HBOs tech satire “Silicon Valley” playfully referred to it as “the D-word.”) If things go south and the company loses valuation, the unicorn could instead turn into a “unicorpse.”

Reading through “Valley Speak” reveals how all of this jargon has emerged from a unique confluence of technology, finance, marketing and business management. The resulting lexical stew is at once inventive and perplexing, so a guide is most welcome - at least until the next batch of trendy words bubbles up.
