For generations, the Swedish Royal Mounted Guard, known as the Livgardet, has represented one of Europe’s most enduring military ceremonial traditions dating back to 1521. Their presence on horseback during state occasions is a powerful symbol of continuity, discipline, and national heritage. But even traditions rooted in history must change when safety is at stake.

As safety standards continued to evolve, Livgardet recognized the need to re-evaluate the protective equipment used in mounted ceremonial service. Rather than retrofit an existing design, the decision was made to pursue an entirely new solution that could integrate current safety thinking into a helmet worthy of Sweden’s royal traditions.

That challenge led to a close collaboration between the Swedish Armed Forces and Strategic Sports.

“From the very beginning, it was clear that this project was about respect,” said Norman Cheng, Managing Director of Strategic Sports. “Respect for history, respect for the riders, and respect for the responsibility that comes with protecting people no matter who they are, including those in highly visible roles.”

Working closely with Livgardet, Strategic Sports supported the development of a new ceremonial riding helmet that integrates contemporary safety principles within a traditionally inspired design. The result is a helmet that preserves the visual identity expected of a royal ceremonial unit while delivering certified protective performance.

Every aspect of the helmet was designed to serve both the unique form of a Royal helmet and state-of-the-art functionality as a protective device. The exterior plastic shell includes ornate metal detailing, and a removable peak accommodates traditional plumes. All decorative elements are engineered to release in an impact, aligning ceremonial equipment with modern rider-safety expectations. Inside, a low-friction MIPS slip layer is integrated to help reduce rotational forces transmitted to the rider’s head during certain angled impacts.

这款头盔的每一个细节都要符合皇家头盔的独特造型，又能具备先进的防护功能。其外部的塑料外壳带有精美的金属装饰，可拆卸的帽檐还能容纳传统的羽毛装饰。所有的装饰元素在受到冲击时都能释放，使仪式装备与现代骑手的安全期望完美契合。头盔内部集成了一层低摩擦的MIPS滑动层，可以有效降低某些角度的撞击中对骑手头部的旋转力。

The helmet entered service on Sweden’s National Day, June 6th, during the mounted escort of the royal family from the Royal Palace to Skansen. The moment reflected the project’s core ambition: introducing meaningful safety advancement without disrupting the visual language of national ceremony.

“This collaboration shows that safety innovation does not have to come at the expense of identity or tradition,” Cheng said. “With the right engineering approach and close partnership, we can honor the past while providing the performance and safety standards that all riders deserve.”

The helmet is approved by the Swedish Equestrian Federation and certified for elite-level competition, confirming that it meets rigorous modern safety requirements beyond ceremonial use. It stands as a testament to what can be achieved when tradition, innovation, and protection are aligned through thoughtful design and engineering collaboration.
