Paul, have you noticed how early it gets dark now?

Yes! It’s because the Winter Solstice is coming—the shortest day of the year.
是啊！因为冬至快到了，这是一年中白昼最短的一天。
In China, we say “冬至大如年”. Families gather and eat special foods.
在中国，我们说“冬至大如年”，家人会团聚并享用特别的节日食物。
That sounds meaningful. What do people usually eat?
听起来很有意义。大家通常吃什么呢？
In the north, people eat dumplings (jiǎozi), and in the south, sweet rice balls (tāngyuán).
在北方，人们吃饺子；在南方，吃甜汤圆。
Are there any special meanings behind these foods?
这些食物有什么特别的寓意吗？
Dumplings look like gold ingots, symbolizing wealth. Round tangyuan represent family togetherness.
饺子形似元宝，象征财富；圆圆的汤圆则代表团团圆圆。
Making tangyuan is fun—kneading the dough and choosing fillings like sesame or red bean.
做汤圆很有意思——揉面团，选芝麻或豆沙之类的馅料。
Can you teach me how to wrap them?
你能教我怎么包吗？
Sure! Gently roll the dough into a ball, then pinch the edges together.
当然！轻轻把面团搓成球，再把边捏紧。
These tangyuan taste sweet and warm—perfect for a cold day!
