On 10th January 2018, the latest version European toys standard EN 71-8:2018(Safety of toys. Activity toys for domestic use) was published by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). It supersedes the previous version EN 71-8:2011.
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by July 2018, and conflicting national standards shall be withdrawn at the latest by July 2018.
The latest revision includes many clarifications and technical changes. The details are as follows:
1. Revised the scope, the scope of this European standard excludes:
1) Trampolines for domestic use dealt with in EN 71-14.
2) Toy pools with maximum depth of water over 400 mm measured, between the overflow level and the deepest point within the pool.
2. Added a new clause water accumulation.
3. Revised requirements on head, neck and finger entrapment.
4. Added a clause which specifies that certain declined planes are exempted from the requirements in 4.5.
5. The requirement that slips must consist of at least one seat part, one slide part and one spout part and that the connection between the sliding section and the run out section should be continuous curve.
6. Revised the requirements on the impact from swing elements.
7. Revised the requirements on the geometry and design of swing elements.
8. Added new requirements for fall protection of swings with double seat and test method.
9. Revised the warning and instructions requirements for paddling pools. The prohibition pictogram is no longer required. Only the mandatory action sign is required:
10. Revised the stability tests for slides and see-saws, and revised the number of users on slides for stability and strength tests.
11. Revised the head and neck entrapment test and toggle test.
MTS reminds related companies to timely follow up on new laws and regulations, produce and export according to requirements, and pay attention to the requirements of the declaration of conformity. Scientific safety assessments must be carried out during the product design phase to the bulk production phase to ensure that relevant products meet the new regulatory requirements and avoid export risk.
