“通宝”是中国自唐初至清末铜币的一种名称。早期多以重量作为钱币名称，另有元宝、重宝、之宝等钱。唐代改变了秦、汉以来钱币以重量命名的习惯，唐高祖武德四年(621)废五铢钱，开始铸造开元通宝，币面上下右左有“开元通宝”四字。“开元”意为开辟新纪元，“通宝”意为通行宝货。有人按顺时针方向回环来读作“开通元宝”，成为后世铜币以“通宝”或 “元宝”命名的由来。
