第三套人民币是中国人民银行于1962年4月15日开始发行的。与第二套人民币比价相等，并在市场上与之混合流通。第三套人民币主要在文化大革命时期流通，堪称“红色货币”，是钱币收藏市场上的“狂热”品种，价值走势一路红火，平均每年翻三翻，备受藏友追逐。

第三套人民币珍藏册，此套《红色财富》——第三套人民币珍藏册同时也是新中国完全独立发行的第一套纸币。自1962年始发、至2000年退出流通，历时38年，为新中国流通时间最长的一套纸币，历经文革的动荡，见证改革开放的奇迹，比较集中的反映了当时中国国民经济以农业为基础，以工业为主导，农工并举的方针。堪称最具时代文化气息的一套纸币。
The third set of collections of RMB, Red Wealth, is also the first set of banknotes issued by New China independently. Starting in 1962 and withdrawing from circulation in 2000, it lasted 38 years. 对这套人民币纸币的设计、印刷，中央和国务院都很重视，周恩来总理还作了具体指示。他指出原设计稿的画面面积太大，不太像票子；色彩太鲜艳，不够协调；人像一般化，个性不突出。有些票子的背面图是应该互相掉换，如原5元券的背面图景是“石油矿井”，原2元券的背面图景是“露天煤矿”，两者互相掉换，以“露天煤矿”用作5元券的背面图景与其正面炼钢图景配套，以“石油矿井”用作2元券的背面图景与其正面机械工业图景配套，这样更为合理；原设计稿中1角券图景为“干部参加劳动”，考虑到1角的票子学生们可能用得多些，要求改为“教育与生产劳动相结合”的图景；连1元券稿样中有一处汉语拼音错误，也被周恩来指明改正。搞样版设计时，邀请了中央美术学院、中央工艺美术学院的著名教授进行座谈，听取意见。因此，这套人民币的质量有了较大提高。
The Central Committee and the State Council attach great importance to the design and printing of this set of RMB banknotes. Premier Zhou Enlai also gave specific instructions. He pointed out that the original design draft was too large to resemble tickets, too bright and incongruous in colour, too general in human image and not prominent in personality. Some tickets should be exchanged for each other. For example, the background of the original 5-yuan coupon is "oil mine", and the background of the original 2-yuan coupon is "open pit coal mine". The two sides should be exchanged for each other. The background of the 5-yuan coupon used as "open pit coal mine" should be matched with its front steelmaking picture, and the background of the 2-yuan coupon used as "oil mine" should be matched with its front mechanical industry picture. In order to be reasonable, the original design of the 1-yuan voucher is "cadres participate in labor". Considering that students may use more of the 1-yuan voucher, they need to change it to "combining education with production and labor". Even a Chinese phonetic error in the 1-yuan voucher is pointed out and corrected by Zhou Enlai. In the process of sample design, famous professors from the Central Academy of Fine Arts and the Central Academy of Arts and Crafts were invited to hold talks and listen to their opinions. Therefore, the quality of this set of RMB has been greatly improved.
