母版就是雕母又叫祖钱。用铜块或锡、铅块直接雕刻成钱模，铸钱时用祖钱作模，翻铸母钱。这些母钱颁发到各地，各地则用母钱制范铸币。祖钱的雕制需要十分精良，目前所见雕母都是金黄色的铜质，是质地优良的铜材。

此币正面图案袁世凯侧面头像，上环铸发行年号，人像眉毛胡子、双眼皮十分清晰。背面是两株交叉的稻穗，名“嘉禾纹”。中央竖写壹圆币值。由于是母版，体积流通钱大，铜质也较好。钱的外缘轮廓、字口深峻，乃与众不同极其罕见的珍品，及具投资收藏价值。
The front side of the coin is Yuan Shikai's profile head. The issue number is cast in the upper ring. The person's eyebrows, beard and double eyelids are very clear. On the back are two crossed panicles, named Jiahe grain. A dollar value is written vertically in the center. 古钱币爱好者应当把铁母和铁范铜钱区别开来，铁母钱是为铸造铁钱翻砂制成的母钱，再由母钱铸成流通钱，它和铜币实际上只是铸币材料的不同。而铁范铜钱，是在大批铸铁钱之前，先将熔化的铜液注入，以检查钱模的效果，因而这些铜钱称为试铸品。它是与铁钱形制完全相同的铜钱，这种钱流传极少。
