袁大头是对铸造于民国初年镌有袁世凯侧面头像壹圆银币的一种俗称，因其首铸于民国三年,又有称“民三”者，此类別称由来已久。在辛亥革命后，袁世凯为了解决军费和提高个人政治地位，发行铸有他的侧身图像的钱币。历史上，辛亥革命爆发后，北洋新军创始人袁世凯窃取了革命果实，成为中华人民共和国的总统，随后又进行复辟帝制的活动。在其就位期间，为了加强自己的统治地位，稳定国内时局，同时发展民族经济，便开始将全国的货币进行了统一的改造，变革成今天我们所提到的袁大头银币。本文介绍的是一枚民国三年袁大圆。

此枚民国三年袁大头几经历代的传承和沧桑，更显其自然和古朴的旧币品相，磨损处的光滑表面，在阳光下依然习习生辉。钱币正面中央为袁世凯左侧五分像，上铸中文繁体“中华民国三年”。钱币背面为嘉禾图案和币值，嘉禾古称生长奇异的禾，古人以之为吉祥的征兆。亦泛指生长茁壮的禾稻。寓意国家重视农桑、以民生为本，其另一思想取其家和之谐音，寓意”家和万事兴“之意。
