新疆铜元明显受内地铜元的影响，采用机制，取消中孔，较红钱铸造细致，式样精美。但它和内地铜元作价不同（按清代比价，红钱1文等于制钱5文），内地铜元属于制钱体系；新疆铜元则和红钱挂钩，每枚铜元标明“当红钱五文（十文或二十文）”字样，类似大钱，是清代新疆红钱制度的继续和发展，属于红钱体系。它在市场上与红钱一样共同行用，与红钱一样起着银两的辅币作用。

此组钱币为新疆通用宣统元宝当红钱十文，钱币正面珠圈中央是汉文“光绪元宝”四字，珠圈上方铸有“新疆通用”字样，下方铸有币值“当红钱十文”；背面为蟠龙花纹。钱币虽小，也可管窥当时社会文化及经济一斑，更凸显当时制造工艺的精湛，具有极高的文化价值、收藏价值和升值空间。

新疆铜元有其明显的地方色彩和民族特色，在中国铜元中独树一帜。虽然是采用机制，但设备陈旧，铸造工艺落后，故铜料提炼不精，硬度较低，加之机器压力不足，以致币面凸出甚浅，容易磨平；又因模具不耐用，需时常更换新模，这又决定了新疆铜元版式极多，铸造粗劣，纹饰平夷，错版、大小轻重不一的现象经常发生，还有文字、图饰的设计制作均十分简朴和随意，使新疆铜元具有塞外刚劲粗犷的风格。
