光绪十五年(1889),张之洞奉命调往湖北，任湖广总督，此后不久，便将广东的经验运用于湖北，并在湖北武昌筹建了国内第二家采用机器制造银元的官方铸钱机构——湖北银元局，该局也是张之洞来到湖北后建造的第一家铸钱机构。

此枚“湖北省造宣统元宝”，品相完好，图文清晰，工艺精湛，是精品古钱币。钱币正面中央珠圈内镌繁体字“宣统元宝”四字，字体端庄工整，圆润大方，笔画刚劲有力，中间铸满文“宣统元宝”字样。珠圈外上端书“湖北省造”四字，下端镌繁体字“库平七钱二分”，左右两侧各镌一个对称的花饰。银币背面镌一个环状盘旋的龙图案和云朵，神龙腾飞图腾，龙纹霸气侧漏，神武有力，豪气万千，大有帝王之风，定睛一看，仿佛一幅神龙翱翔天际的油画，震撼而精美，令人叹为观止。龙图四周有英文环绕，中西文化融合明显，历史意义深厚。
