元宝是古代的一种货币，由贵重的黄金或白银制成，一般白银居多，黄金稀见。在中国货币史上，正式把金银称作元宝，始于元代。不过，早在唐初开元通宝行世时，民间就有取其硕大、贵重之意，旋读为开通元宝。而元代呼金银钱为元宝，则是元朝之宝的意思，黄金叫作金元宝，银锭叫作银元宝，既有政治含义，也是对金银货币约定俗成的通称。元宝起源于唐朝，在唐朝建中初期就有使用白银支付大宗马钱的记录，从出土的宝物中也证实，唐代已有银制的元宝，也就是仰面似船，伏面似案桌面的船形银铤。本文主要介绍一件寿字元宝。
