"袁大头”是收藏品市场的口语俗称，严谨点说叫“袁世凯像背嘉禾银币”，是民国初期袁世凯出任大总统后统一币制发行的货币。袁世凯为了提高自己的统治地位，把他的头像铸在钱币上，民间俗称的“袁大头”由此而来。

藏品是民国三年铸造的精品袁世凯伍圆银元。银元正面为袁世凯五分侧面像，右侧刻着“苏维埃”，上列“中华民国三年”六字，背面两条嘉禾，左右交互，下系结带，中铸‘伍圆’二字。即使是“百年高龄”，但是仍然保存完整，品相较好。“袁大头”代表了中国近代的货币文化，反映了我国近代历史、经济、金融的兴衰和沧桑，具有很高的艺术观赏价值和文物价值，也具有一定的保值和升值功能。

1931年，国党反动派对苏区进行军事围剿和经济封锁，红色政权对敌斗争环境十分恶劣，为了适应对敌斗争形势的需要，红军便在从打土豪缴获来的民国三年‘袁大头’旧银元上，在袁世凯头像右侧打上了‘苏维埃’的戳记，为我所用，以示区别，用来发展革命根据地经济，保障红军供给和红色政权建设。而国民党曾将不少盖有‘苏维埃’的银元回炉重铸，因此盖有‘苏维埃’戳的‘袁大头’并不多见，具有较高的收藏价值。
