咸丰重宝是清朝政府为筹款镇压太平军，缓解财政危机，于咸丰三年开铸的大钱。铸造有“咸丰重宝”、“咸丰元宝”等钱币。此种铜钱币十分精美，字迹清晰深俊，铜材优良，呈浅红黄色，比同版流通的钱稍大些、厚重些。当五十及以下计值称为“咸丰重宝”，高于当五十计值称为“咸丰元宝”，以区别于小平钱“咸丰通宝”。

此币正面铸有楷书“咸丰重宝”四字，从上而下而右而左直读，字迹苍劲有力。钱币背面铸“當十”标明币值，左右满文表钱局（宝苏）。观其铸体，铸制规整，边圆廓正，坦平地章，穿缘廓干净，优良铸工，更显字廓深竣挺拔，精整有加。钱文精美，没一丝一毫拖泥带水，比同版流通的钱稍大些、厚重些。由于铸造时间早，流通区域广，所以也是自古以来古藏爱好者最关心并致力于收藏和欣赏的钱币。
