What is Hongyunsha?
"Hongyunsha," also known as "Huanglang yarn fabric," is a type of silk fabric with specific craftsmanship and appearance. Its base fabric is called "white坯 yarn," a product pioneered in Nanhai County during the early Republic of China period. It is woven from raw silk, featuring a unique twisted yarn structure in the warp that creates patterns resembling twisted eyelets and openwork designs.
When white坯 yarn undergoes treatment with riverbed mud and aged but is not coated with mud during the finishing process, the resulting fabric takes on a red hue and is thus named "red Huanglang yarn fabric" or "Hongyunsha." In the past, this type of fabric was primarily used by ordinary people. In contrast, white坯 yarn treated with both riverbed mud and aged and coated with mud produces a black-colored fabric known as "black胶绸," which was generally more favored by the middle and upper classes.
