Longxue Subdistrict: A Pearl on the Lingdingyang Ocean in Guangzhou's Nansha District

Longxue Subdistrict is under the administration of Nansha District, Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province. It is located in the southeastern part of Nansha District, bordering the Pearl River estuary to the east, the Lingdingyang Ocean to the south, the Jiaomen Waterway to the west, and the Fuzhou Waterway to the north, covering a total area of 128.90 square kilometers. This area has undergone multiple administrative changes: in 1949, it belonged to the Wanqingsha Takeover Office Farm; in 1950, it was renamed the "State-Owned Wanqingsha Farm"; in 1953, Longxue Island was placed under the jurisdiction of Zhuhai; by the end of 2008, it was affiliated with Zhujiang Street; in 2009, administrative and social affairs were taken over by Wanqingsha Town; and finally, on September 7, 2011, Longxue Subdistrict was officially established. The subdistrict is named after Longxue Island within its territory, reflecting its deep historical roots and geographical characteristics. As of 2021, Longxue Subdistrict administers four communities: Longxue, Gangkou, Longyang, and Longhai. The subdistrict office is located at No. 13 Longxue Avenue Middle, forming a comprehensive management system.

Longxue Subdistrict boasts a unique geographical location and abundant natural resources. The island is home to the Sansheng Gong Temple, a district-level cultural relic protection unit originally built during the Ming Dynasty and reconstructed in the 20th year of the Guangxu era (1894) of the Qing Dynasty, carrying profound historical and cultural heritage. Additionally, the Longxue Island Natural Scenic Area, concentrated around Tonggu Mountain, features attractions such as Longgong and Zhangbaozai Cave, drawing numerous tourists for sightseeing. In terms of transportation, the subdistrict has a bus depot operating three bus routes: Line 1, Line 21, and Line 27, facilitating resident travel. It also has one telecommunications service outlet and service points from three banks—China Construction Bank, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, and Bank of China—meeting the daily needs of residents.


The demographic structure of Longxue Subdistrict presents distinctive characteristics. As of the end of 2020, the permanent population was 13,588 (data from the Seventh National Population Census), accounting for 1.61% of Nansha District's total permanent population. By the end of 2011, there were only 191 registered households with a registered population of 1,618, including 1,146 males (68.5%) and 472 females (31.5%), along with a floating population of 18,953, indicating that the subdistrict is primarily composed of migrants. Among the registered population, the vast majority are of Han ethnicity, with nine individuals from four ethnic minorities—Manchu, Yao, Miao, and Tujia—reflecting a multicultural community atmosphere. In 2011, the subdistrict's birth rate was 5.61‰, the death rate was 0.62‰, and the natural growth rate was 4.99‰, demonstrating relatively stable population development. This demographic composition not only highlights Longxue Subdistrict's appeal as an emerging area but also injects vitality into its economic and social development.

Economically, Longxue Subdistrict has shown remarkable performance, achieving a GDP of 8.698 billion yuan in 2011, reflecting strong growth momentum. Agriculture primarily focuses on pond farming, covering an area of 4,000 mu, with a total agricultural output value of 32 million yuan, illustrating the continuation of traditional industries. Industry serves as the pillar of the subdistrict's economy. By the end of 2011, there were eight industrial enterprises above the designated size, employing 15,000 workers. Annual shipbuilding completions reached 2.1 million deadweight tons, with a total industrial output value of 5.385 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 3.8%, and an industrial added value of 887 million yuan, achieving profits of approximately 63 million yuan, highlighting its advantages in shipbuilding and manufacturing. Commerce and finance have also gradually developed, with one commercial network employing 200 people and three bank service points providing convenient financial services for residents and businesses. The overall economic structure is industry-led, supplemented by agriculture and commerce, forming a diversified industrial landscape.


In terms of social initiatives, Longxue Subdistrict focuses on improving livelihoods and cultural development. By the end of 2011, the subdistrict had three cultural and artistic groups. Sports facilities included one seven-a-side football field, seven basketball courts, five tennis courts, and one table tennis room. Amateur sports teams, such as basketball, dragon boat, and dance teams, regularly organized sports activities, enriching the spiritual and cultural lives of residents. In healthcare, there was one community health station with four professional medical personnel, handling 34,000 medical consultations. The rates of safe drinking water and sanitary toilets in rural areas both reached 100%, ensuring basic health needs. The social security system has been gradually improved. In 2011, there were three households with minimum living security, involving four people, with expenditures of 25,000 yuan. Annual social donations received totaled 120,000 yuan, reflecting a spirit of community mutual aid.

As an important part of Nansha District, Longxue Subdistrict has made significant contributions not only economically but also in social governance and cultural heritage. Its unique geographical location and rich historical background make it a shining pearl on the Lingdingyang Ocean. In the future, with the further development of Nansha District, Longxue Subdistrict has the potential to enhance eco-tourism and community construction while maintaining its industrial strengths, creating a better living environment for residents. Overall, Longxue Subdistrict is a modern subdistrict that combines industrial vitality, natural scenery, and cultural heritage, moving toward a more prosperous and harmonious future.
