He was included in The Master Winemaker 100 guide, a report that celebrates the stars of the wine world who have scooped the highest accolade of the drinks business’ Global Masters tasting series.The awards ceremony was at Wine Paris/Vinexpo Paris last month.

Catena Zapata首席酿酒师

作为家里的“淘气孩子”,维吉尔14岁时离开学校加入了一个葡萄酒合作社,但为了安抚母亲,他继续学习,后来以全班Diyi名的成绩毕业于农业工程专业。在2002年加入Catena Zapata担任首席酿酒师之前,他曾领导INTA(国家农业技术研究所)的土壤部门。2009年,他和Adrianna Catena(阿德里安娜·卡蒂娜)创立了El Enemigo品牌。
The ‘enfant terrible’ of his family, Vigil left school at 14 to join a wine co-op, but continued his studies to placate his mother, later graduating top of his class in agricultural engineering. He headed the soils division at INTA (National Agricultural Technology Institute)before joining Catena Zapata in 2002 as chief winemaker.In 2009 he and Adrianna Catena set up El Enemigo.


是什么或谁激励您成为一名酿酒师?

What or who inspired you to become a winemaker?

Being born in a house where wine was a way of life. My biggest inspirations were my grandfather, my father and life.

What’s your favourite part of the job? 

Walking around the vineyards, feeling the heat, irrigating, experiencing the cold pruning days, observing the day-to-day and taking that experience to the winery as transparently as possible.


最难的部分是什么?

我不确定这是最难的,但我觉得理解了人改变不了自然这件事很难。我永远会记得和家人的一闪晚餐。

What’s the hardest part?

I’m not sure it’s the hardest, but understanding that one cannot change nature is difficult. I will always remember a family dinner.

We were about to harvest tomatoes and suddenly hail ruined everything. My grandfather went out after the storm, knelt down, and my grandmother stood by him and said: “Tomorrow we will begin again.” They came back inside and continued the dinner.



在漫长的一天结束后,您最喜欢喝什么?

我喜欢喝起泡的或新鲜的白葡萄酒。我永远不会排除用冰块或苏打水混合的葡萄酒,这会让我的身体和灵魂都凉快下来。

What’s your go-to drink at the end of a long day ? 

I like to enjoy sparkling or fresh white wine. I will never rule out wine with an ice cube or mixed with sparkling water. Something to cool me down, body and soul.

我会提醒自己,而不是建议自己,一切都有待完成,一切都可以改变,没有绝对,甚至我们自己也不例外。改变固定模式不是一个选项,而就是选项。

What advice would you give your younger self? 

I would remind myself more than advise myself that everything is yet to be done, everything can be changed and there are no absolutes, not even ourselves. Changing paradigms is not an option, it is the option.


您觉得在酿酒中最大的错误是什么?

应该是自以为可以在酒厂里就能改变葡萄酒。事实上,只有在葡萄园里才能进行真正的改进。

What was your greatest winemaking mistake? 

The greatest mistake was to think one can change wines from within the winery. It is in the vineyard where real improvement can be done.


您最引以为豪与葡萄酒相关的成就是什么?

Which wine-related achievement are you most proud of?

Betting on Malbec in the 2000s when more Cabernet Sauvignon was produced, betting on Cabernet Franc in the mid-2000s, then thinking we can produce world-class Chardonnay. Basically, I’m happy for allowing myself to dream.

Who is your inspiration in the wine world today? 

Nicolas Catena is my inspiration, a true pioneer. Adrianna’s Vineyard in Gualtallary, Uco Valley, is a perfect example of his vision. A place referred to today as a world-class vineyard that he planted when the region was only a desert.


您幻想中的葡萄园在哪里?

Where would your fantasy vineyard be? 

It exists and is located in Lunlunta (Maipú, Mendoza). A 100-year-old vineyard. Walking through this place makes me feel small and revitalises me. This is the essence of terroir, the importance of the human being as a whole and not a specific person.


如果您不是酿酒师,你会做什么?为什么?

没有B计划,我现在是,将来也永远是一个葡萄种植者。

If you weren’t a winemaker,what would you be doing and why? 

There wasn’t a Plan B. I am and always will be a viticultor.

How has your taste in wine changed over your career? 

A long time ago, a Burgundy winemaker asked me if I liked to produce white or red wines. I quickly answered reds. Today, after 20 years, I’m loving the white challenge, wines I usually drink. Whites are transparent to the region and to winemaking techniques. With whites you can see the real respect of the winemakers for the terroir.
