Les Riceys is a small village (less than 1,400 inhabitants) located 30 km south of the town of Troyes. It belongs to the Côte des Bar, the southernmost Champagne wine region, neighbor to wine region of Burgundy (Chablis). Its vineyards were first planted in the 7th century.

With 866 hectares, it is the biggest wine region of Champagne. The overall landscape is hilly with vineyards being surrounded by trees.The vines are grown on vineyards on both side of the river La Laignes between 2 to 300 meters of altitude on a mix of clay and limestone with apparent stones.

The subsoil is like the one of Chablis : Kimmeridgian Marl (characterized by the abundant presence of a small oyster in a shape of a comma called exogyra virgula).

The slopes can be quite steep which prevents the use of machine. Pinot Noir is the king of this region, grown on South/South East exposed slopes.The local climate and conditions give to the Pinot Noir of les Riceys its unique character of power, body, aromatic complexity and minerality.

Les Riceys once belonged to the Duchy of Burgundy, therefore the architecture of the village is very similar to the villages of Burgundy.

In 1822, the wines from Les Riceys were considered among the best of France.
